Suzuki Junzo: Shark Infested Custard (2016)

I’m not much of a “noise” or “drone” guy. My musical bones growing up was really whatever was on the classic rock radio station, and though I’ve grown over the decades following the paths of classical, jazz, and extreme metal, the more experimental music never caught me the way it did many of my friends. But every so often something will catch my ear, a confluence of aural signposts that lead to an unexpected destination. Suzuki Junzo has been traveling this path for a while, having released albums solo or with a multitude of bands for over 20 years. Metallica: 72 Seasons (2023)

I used to worry about how to reconcile the “objective” writer with the passionate fan when it came to my favorite artists. I’ve made no secret of my love for Metallica and how they were the band who brought me into extreme metal. I wrote a little about it for Nine Circles almost seven years ago, and here we are seven years later with 72 Seasons, their newest release. And listening to it for the past seven months (man, there are a lot of sevens in this thing, huh?), my heart and mind have run the gamut concerning my feelings for the music: sheer excitement for the singles; the joy of the first complete listen; disappointment upon hearing (and certainly reading) the inevitable cracks in the facade; the quiet resignation as other albums were released and the metal social media made their jokes and moved on. But now that we’re nearing the end of 2023 and everyone and their brother are making EOY lists (mine come out starting the second week of December) I wanted to really sit down and ignore everyone else, and just listen and see what I heard.

Surprise: I really, really like 72 Seasons, warts and all.

Consuming More Than Just Music

Just when I was getting back into the swing of writing here, I’m gone for a month and a half. What happened? Was this just another blow-off? That’s something I’ve been struggling with: this site mainly focuses on music, but that’s not the only media – tangible or otherwise – I consume on a regular basis. So while I haven’t been here writing up the latest vinyl and cassette (yeah, I know…) purchases, I’ve been extremely busy working on film reviews.

Horror film reviews, to be precise.
