(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 17: A-Z in the Physical Alphabet

I’m 14 films in for the Hooptober Marathon. There have been some real highs (Insidious, The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster) and some real lows (Humanoids From The Deep). You can read all about it over at Cinema Dual; In the meantime, I decided on a quick theme: a playlist that goes from A-Z for bands (no solo performers) in my physical collection.

That’s enough preamble; let’s get to the playlist.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 16: Into the Prog Machine, 2024 Edition

A quick one, because it’s 6am as I write this on the day it’s supposed to go live, and I have to leave to take my son on a college visit in an hour. I’m also 7 reviews into my Hooptober marathon, so if you want to read about all sorts of horror films you can check that out over at Cinema Dual. In the meantime, ‘et get into some of the new prog that’s been keeping me afloat in 2024, shall we?

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 15: Horror Hiatus (A New Definition Shuffle)

9/22/2024 UPDATE: Don’t ask me how, but in my bleary, exhausted attempt to get Episode 16 out on time, I somehow wrote over Episode 16’s post instead of simply copying the post and using it as a template. So the TL;DR version: for the rest of September and probably most of October I will be participating in the annual Hooptober Horror Marathon, watching and writing reviews for 34 horror films based on a number of rules and criteria that change each marathon. Yo can see my list and the rules that built it here, and follow along over at Cinema Dual. In the meantime I’ll still be getting these playlists out, and will try to do a few capsule reviews in the meantime.

We’ll be back to normal programming in November!

roky erikson - the evil one cover

Roky Erikson: The Evil One (1981)

How much does history play into how we perceive music? Not our own history; that much should be clear to anyone who ever had personal connection to a song or artist. But what about history we’re not involved in? Specifically when it comes to Roky Erikson, the legendary singer/guitarist/songwriter for early psychedelic band the 13th Floor Elevators. I was aware of his tragic history the same instant I first heard him – intro’d by Henry Rollins on his KCRW radio show. Does knowing of his troubles and schizophrenia diagnosis (not to mention the abuse while detained at Rusk State Hospital and copious amounts of electro-shock therapy) color my perception of The Evil One, his debut album (depending how and where you first heard it), making it stand out differently than if I just heard it blind? I don’t know, and honestly I’m not sure it matters.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 14: Digital Analog (70s Edition)

I used to maintain a playlist called Digital Analog which was essentially a playlist of all my vinyl and cassettes. It had a nice ring and was useful for tracking what I owned as I started V2 of my vinyl journey. That playlist is long gone, but I’ve been thinking a lot about it as I start to re-think my purchasing habits – there’s just not enough room in this house for what has built to just over 1,400 records in about six years. Especially with the new releases – most of these were recorded digitally, so ANY vinyl master is going to come from a digital source in most of those cases (I know, a few bands and starts still record analog, but that’s increasingly a rarity). So is there still a benefit? Maybe if there’s a specific vinyl master, but who knows who’s doing that?

flower kings - by royal decree album art

The Flower Kings: By Royal Decree (2022)

And here we are, at end of the Flower Kings road, despite there being a new mediocre album in 2023 and a stunning live album from earlier this year. Maybe I’ll return if I get more physical copies, but I admit I’m slightly tired from all the intense listening, and ready to put this series to bed with By Royal Decree, the 2022 album that sees the return of Michael Stolt on bass and the slow departure of Jonas Reingold who plays on a few select tracks here. Other than that the lineup is consistent from Islands, as is the direction: shorter, more concise songs that run about 94 minutes in total. But I think there are nuances to that approach that – for me at least – bear a little more fruit than the previous album. Let’s jump in and discuss it.
