(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 72: Aggressive Rise

I’ve been head down for so long with my deep dive into the Grateful Dead that a random pop-up of the latest Ghost (not the heaviest album by any and every definition of the word) triggered my brain to seek out some aggression to get in my ears. That and the latest reissues from Boris appearing at my door when I returned from a couple days of travel were the impetus for today’s title: aggression is rising, but it can’t completely stem the tide of obscure 70s rock gems from making their way to my ears. What do I mean? Let’s dig in below the jump.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 51: A Random Riot

Super brief, but not exactly random. I’m upstate in the woods for a family get-together, and didn’t have time to properly get a playlist off. But there’s a small bit of method to the madness here: I’ve been listening to a lot of indie rock that is either comprised of women or feature women, and so the first half of this playlist is a showcase for some incredible music in that arena. The second half is all instrumental psych rock. Enjoy!

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 30: Best of 2024: Metal Honorable Mentions

Last playlist of the year is all metal. On Thursday I released my Nine Circles Honorable Mentions, and it’s a beast: 25 albums that moved and rocked me in some way. So similar to last week’s (Un)Focused Definition this is going to focus on those albums, with the final, “official” best of metal list coming in the first year of January, and then my “all-in” playlist accompanying the year-end round up post here, sometime in mid-January. I want to say I’m looking forward to getting back to older albums again, but the truth is there were so many great records released this year I’m having a blast going back and revisiting them all. So grab your denim vest, don your spikes, and let’s get heavy for round #2 of great 2024 metal.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 23: Cold Comfort

Find the light where you can. Lead with compassion, with empathy.

That’s what I’ve been having to tell people all week; not just because of the US election, but it was also the week of massive and hurtful layoffs where I work. I’m still here, a lot of people aren’t. And for some of them, I had to be the one in the room, on the phone, or on the video conference. Never did that before. Didn’t have much choice. I console myself by saying not matter how much I’m hurting, others are hurting much, much worse. So I try, I try to remember that, and to push back hate and anger because at the moment righteous fury feels like a lie.

The music helps, a little.

melvins/boris - twins of evil

Melvins/Boris: Twins of Evil (2024)

At some point I’m going to take a deep dive into the music of Boris, a band I have come to absolutely (amplifier?) worship over the years, starting from their later, more accessible moments and spiraling down to their early, fuzzed out droning earthquake sonics. Melvins are a more mysterious band for me, a collective I know in small pockets despite only only a few releases on digital. The history of these two monsters of noise is long and intertwined, continuing to this very moment with the release of Twins of Evil, a split commemorating the bands’ 2023 tour. Two tracks, each one about 20 minutes long and currently only available as a cheap but awesome $5 CD from Amphetamine Reptile. I couldn’t wait for the vinyl coming soon, so here we are, the CD arriving today and a virgin listening experience awaiting below.

Boris: Reincarnation Rose (2021)

Boris is a band that evolves with you. I remember first discovering them when Pink was released back in 2005, and you could argue this was the start of their more “accessible phase” so maybe it was good timing, coming in at a point where the band was injecting their unique style into molds with recognizable shapes. I kept listening as they moved forward, but their previous, more drone and noise inspired works always felt distant and unconnected for me. As I grew older and experienced more music, their sonic signature continued to align closer to mine, until the point arrived where I find myself more often than not turning to the band’s entire catalog based on my mood and my emotion/mental needs. So enter Reincarnation Rose, which on the surface is a single being used to push Wata’s collaboration with Earthquaker Devices on a new fuzz pedal modeled after her tone, but on a deeper, more personal level for me marries what I originally loved in the band, and what I grew to love the more I listened, and the more I opened up to music.
