(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 72: Aggressive Rise

I’ve been head down for so long with my deep dive into the Grateful Dead that a random pop-up of the latest Ghost (not the heaviest album by any and every definition of the word) triggered my brain to seek out some aggression to get in my ears. That and the latest reissues from Boris appearing at my door when I returned from a couple days of travel were the impetus for today’s title: aggression is rising, but it can’t completely stem the tide of obscure 70s rock gems from making their way to my ears. What do I mean? Let’s dig in below the jump.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 65: Missing Sun

It’s official: on Thursday we unpacked our son in his dorm room, said our goodbyes, and became empty nesters. One of the biggest gifts I could give him (besides paying for college) was letting him pick the tunes on the trip up, and so a portion of the playlist this week are the tunes he asked for to calm his nerves. (Un)Focused Definition Ep. 31: Best of 2024: The Metal List

Last First playlist of the year is all metal. On Thursday Friday I released my Nine Circles Honorable Mentions Best Of List, and it’s a beast: 25 albums that moved and rocked me in some way. So similar to last week’s (Un)Focused Definition this is going to focus on those albums with the final, “official” best of metal list coming in the first year of January, and then my “all-in” playlist accompanying the year-end round up post here, sometime in mid-January. Okay, enough strikethroughs: even though we all know the tune by now about rankings as I listened back to this year’s playlist I was really, really happy. I love these albums. We’re already back to the 70s and prog/rock in the main albums reviews, but for one more week, let’s get heavy. Grab that denim vest, don those spikes, and let’s listen to some killer metal that came out in 2024.

Chat Pile: Cool World (2024)

“I AM DOG NOW!” Those words, over that music…that might be the most repeated lyric I shouted out in 2024. And to think Chat Pile were a band that, until now I had a cool admiration for but from a distance, their breakout 2022 album God’s Country impressive but leaving me somewhat cold. At the time. Because there was just something about Cool World, the Oklahoma City noise rock quartet’s new album that not only turned me completely around, but shed new light on their previous output and turned me into a dedicated fan. I am dog now, indeed…
