(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 55: Wake & Recover

Last night was the first night I wasn’t overwhelmed, wasn’t wracked with grief or anxiety (well at least any anxiety I wasn’t already used to) and could slip into some semblance of normalcy. Normalcy of course thinking about work, thinking about my son, thinking about the insanity of our country and the world, so once again I was back up at 5:30am on a week. But I woke up with a smile – an exasperated smile, to be sure – and was almost eager to slip downstairs, brew a cup of coffee (currently drinking a wonderful light roast from Driftaway Coffee) and get to listening. This is some of the music that got me to that point, where I could wake, and recover.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 12: 2024, A Slightly Past Mid-Year Review

I’m about halfway through the next Flower Kings review, and also have a bunch of catchup work, both paying and not, that’s kept me from regular posting this week. So we’re going to keep things brief for this week’s playlist, which is going to highlight tracks from my favorite albums of the year so far. Think of it as a mid-year report, except it’s coming about a month and half too late. And to make up for the lack of commentary, and because there’s so much to love about music in 2024, we’re expanding one time from 1 hours to 2 hours.

Jack White: Lazaretto (2014)

Day 18 of the #mayvinylchallenge asks for a “strange play” – what album has a unique feature about it when you play it? Maybe it’s a locked track, a hidden song, a continuous loop? It’s well established that Jack White is a fan of what vinyl can do, but he might have overdid it with his second solo album Lazaretto, which throws a ton of weird features onto wx with mixed results. The actual music, though? Sweet.
