(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 79: Listin’…

Hello. I’m knee deep in building out lists for end year and have – at age 52 – a pajama party I have to go to tonight. So lots to prepare (my wife is insisting the dirty sweats and John Coltrane hoodie I slept in will NOT suffice for a social event) which means this is another quick playlist while I get stuff ready, build more lists, and figure out next week’s queue of 2025 releases to get in here. It’s not necessarily end of year contenders, although they MIGHT be included (I won’t say); they’re also not necessarily new stuff that’s come in the door recently (although there most certainly will be those as well), and I think that’s a large enough word count for an introduction, so let’s do this.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 54: Ross

I’m too tired, and the mourning subsides only to allow the calm to grab just enough of a hold so that the next stab of shock and anxiety hits like a brick to the face. Here’s the theme: Ross loved jam music. He was a Deadhead, but he also loved Otis Redding. Derek Trucks was a newer fascination, and I already talked about how he would come in and ask about bands like Caravan and older Genesis. God, he was a pain in the ass, but he was also a sweetheart. Next to me is a bag dropped off for my birthday last week, a set of notebooks from Moleskine, including a monogrammed soft leather notebook and a hardcover slipcase volume for logging movies. He knew me, covered for me, and cared.

52 Reasons Why

Wanted to do something different today. It’s my birthday, and I already built a playlist last week celebrating a bunch of great music that came out during the year of my birth. But the music of 1973 isn’t what made me into who I am now – that’s an ever-growing, ever-evolving store of musical moments and memories. And so I wanted to make another playlist, of the songs that inspired me, moved, me, marked significant moments of my life.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 41: Getting The Prog Out (mostly)

In this case I mean literally. I spent the whole week absorbing one Italian Prog album after another, and while I genuinely liked everything I listened to (I really, really loved the Errata Corrige) I really needed to cleanse the palate when it was over. And since I had so much music come in over the week it spurred me to not only focus on that for this playlist, but for next week’s theme as well. Lots of new music, and music new to me this week, even if the length of one of the tracks makes this a shorter playlist than normal. Let’s dig in; I’ll see you on the other side.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 24: Anniversary

As in “my” anniversary. Like, wedding anniversary. I debated just cancelling the playlist this week, but I had a few minutes this morning so in the interest of consistency here’s a slightly random playlist that – if there’s a theme at all – contains music my wife enjoys. She doesn’t really consume music, though there are rare instances where she will ask if we have a specific album, which is my cue to go buy it if we don’t. Really she just puts up with what I like, occasionally pushing back with a gentle” this sucks” which is my cue again to change it up.

No commentary again this week, we’ll be back to regular programming next week assuming this anniversary goes okay.
