holiday 2025 - a small batch of vinyl records and a box set laying on my futon. We got some Eater, Henry Cow, Albert King, Patti Smith, Art Blakey with Thelonius Monk, and Fugees

Holiday Pickups, Sonic Addictions, & Looking Ahead

Happy New Year. I started writing this yesterday, but that’s indicative of how 2025 went, generally. It’s been a year, in other words, one I’d rather forget. Except for the music, that is. Pretty soon I’ll kick off all the various end-of-year lists, but before fully shoving 2025’s ass out the door I wanted to take a few minutes and look back over some of my discoveries, addictions, and other music-related highlights of the year. It’s also been a hot minute since I did one of those “What I got over the holiday/break/vacation” deals, so we’ll start with the incoming holiday music (pictured in the header) and move on to my other predilections and penchants when it came to music in 2025.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 60: Hitting the Medicated Wall

Not gonna lie: I think I’m hitting a bit of a wall. And I don’t know if that’s because of the constant churning out posts, struggling to decide in a day what album I want to cover in addition to the stress of writing for my other sites and covering work/family stuff, or if it’s the fact that I’m now on anxiety medication and my body is having some issues adjusting. It took me years to get to the point where I could finally talk to my doctor (it helped that during the appointment I had a full-blown shaking attack), and so rather than just abandon it I’m trying to get used to it until the “good” benefits take effect in a few weeks. So I don’t know how consistent I’ll be for a while, and this playlist is more of a hodgepodge of music I’m either listening to or interested in listening to.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 57: My Voyage to Italy, Pt. 1

50,607 songs. That’s the current total in my online music library. And that doesn’t count the hundreds of albums I bought off of Bandcamp and haven’t downloaded yet, or the physical albums, CDs, and cassettes I have yet to add. This is what happens when you hit “Shuffle” and take an hour’s worth of music for the playlist. Enjoy.

52 Reasons Why

Wanted to do something different today. It’s my birthday, and I already built a playlist last week celebrating a bunch of great music that came out during the year of my birth. But the music of 1973 isn’t what made me into who I am now – that’s an ever-growing, ever-evolving store of musical moments and memories. And so I wanted to make another playlist, of the songs that inspired me, moved, me, marked significant moments of my life.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 3: Reconstructing the Past

I wish I could go back and change the past.

Not the big moments, not the world-changing events. But those smaller regrets, behaviors and actions that still sting when they rise unbidden in my head. I travel back in my mind, re-arranging conversations and finding that no matter what I do, the shame and guilt remain. I’m sure we all doing the same thing, but recent events have me falling back more, especially when it’s the middle of the night and all I want is escape through sleep. So for this edition of (Un)Focused Definition I went back to 1990-1991, recalling the treasured mix tapes my high school friends would make that colored so much of my life, both the incredible moments and some of the more sour. For better or for worse, let’s jump into a wide array of tunes that shaped 17-year old me.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 1: Recent Acquisitions

Welcome back to (Un)Focused Definition, a weekly series where I put together a playlist of tunes around a theme of my choosing. I’ve been thinking about the format for this thing, and we’re going to keep it pretty short, focusing on the music with maybe a little commentary about the selected tracks. This week we’re looking at recent acquisitions. I just turned 51 a few days ago, and surprise (not): most of my gifts were records. We’re all over the map with jazz, classic rock, prog, and black metal so let’s build this thing and get the weekend started, huh?
