Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks @Westbury Music Fair, 5.16.25

On Friday evening I shook off my introverted-ness enough to head out to Westbury, NY to see Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks perform a selection of (mostly) Yes classics, with a few choice cuts from their stellar 2024 album True sprinkled throughout the band’s two sets. Armed with nothing but a crappy camera phone I got to see a legend sing and wave his tambourine around like it was still the md-70s, despite the man himself being in his 80s. It was wonderful, and to memorialize it I wanted to throw a few words up here.

Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks: True (2024)

Let this be a lesson: NEVER judge a book by its cover. I know…True, the new album from Jon Anderson & The Band Geeks has a startlingly bad cover1. It might put you off to checking out the music within, and that would be a damn shame. Because what we have here is a terrific set of musicians challenging the former Yes frontman to craft the best Yes album in the last 40 years. And damn if Anderson didn’t do just that: bring the classic prog sound (well, classic from the late 70s to early 80s) into the modern era with panache and style. True rocks, it rolls, and it progs like nobody’s business, and it’s probably my favorite album of the year, at least when it comes to playing an album at top volume and breaking my throat trying to sing along every chance I get. What more can you ask for?

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 18: Music in the Interim, An Interlude

I miss writing about music.

I don’t even think I’m that good at it; I’m much more at home writing about film. But 20 film reviews in 20 days has me aching for the deliciousness of an album review. The good news is at this rate I’ll be finished with the Hooptober Horror marathon well in advance of the Halloween deadline so I should be able to get back to normal reviews here sooner rather than later. In the meantime music hasn’t left me; indeed the amount of new stuff coming in continues to be a real problem. So for this interlude we’re back to the standard hour of new music that’s recently crossed the threshold of our domicile.

On to the playlist.
