(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 23: Cold Comfort

Find the light where you can. Lead with compassion, with empathy.

That’s what I’ve been having to tell people all week; not just because of the US election, but it was also the week of massive and hurtful layoffs where I work. I’m still here, a lot of people aren’t. And for some of them, I had to be the one in the room, on the phone, or on the video conference. Never did that before. Didn’t have much choice. I console myself by saying not matter how much I’m hurting, others are hurting much, much worse. So I try, I try to remember that, and to push back hate and anger because at the moment righteous fury feels like a lie.

The music helps, a little.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 5: Big Bands, Deep Cuts

It started with watching Pete Pardo talk about Van Halen on his inaugural entry for Sea of Tranquility’s Favorite Albums to Listen to in Summertime. I’m already planning a “Summer Playlist” in two weeks when I leave for a lengthy (for me) vacation, but Van Halen lingered, and it was a simple matter to put together some kind of “deep cuts” playlist filled with what are – to me – some of the biggest bands I happen to love. So that’s where we’re going this week. Warning: some of these might not be traditionally “deep cuts” – they’re not all buried in the sequencing. Some are favorites from reviled or unpopular albums, at least one was a big hit for another band. And of course one is a Zappa cut. Enjoy the weekend and let’s dig in.

Introducing (Un)Focused Definition

For the past few years over at Nine Circles I cobble together a weekly playlist called – fittingly if slightly uninspired – The Nine Circles Playlist. We put together a list of mostly new metal tracks the staff have been listening to over the course of the past week and, since I get all the picks and build the playlist in YouTube, I get to inject a few of my picks up front. But it’s by nature of the site limiting: if this site has shown anything (beyond my inconsistency) it’s that my tastes run far beyond, and maybe is even more prominently removed from metal (don’t worry, I still love it). So since I’m making them anyway, why not do it here, but really focus on the music I love in all its many forms?

Welcome to (Un)Focused Definition, a new weekly playlist.

Metallica: 72 Seasons (2023)

I used to worry about how to reconcile the “objective” writer with the passionate fan when it came to my favorite artists. I’ve made no secret of my love for Metallica and how they were the band who brought me into extreme metal. I wrote a little about it for Nine Circles almost seven years ago, and here we are seven years later with 72 Seasons, their newest release. And listening to it for the past seven months (man, there are a lot of sevens in this thing, huh?), my heart and mind have run the gamut concerning my feelings for the music: sheer excitement for the singles; the joy of the first complete listen; disappointment upon hearing (and certainly reading) the inevitable cracks in the facade; the quiet resignation as other albums were released and the metal social media made their jokes and moved on. But now that we’re nearing the end of 2023 and everyone and their brother are making EOY lists (mine come out starting the second week of December) I wanted to really sit down and ignore everyone else, and just listen and see what I heard.

Surprise: I really, really like 72 Seasons, warts and all.
