(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 55: Wake & Recover

Last night was the first night I wasn’t overwhelmed, wasn’t wracked with grief or anxiety (well at least any anxiety I wasn’t already used to) and could slip into some semblance of normalcy. Normalcy of course thinking about work, thinking about my son, thinking about the insanity of our country and the world, so once again I was back up at 5:30am on a week. But I woke up with a smile – an exasperated smile, to be sure – and was almost eager to slip downstairs, brew a cup of coffee (currently drinking a wonderful light roast from Driftaway Coffee) and get to listening. 52 Reasons Why

Wanted to do something different today. It’s my birthday, and I already built a playlist last week celebrating a bunch of great music that came out during the year of my birth. But the music of 1973 isn’t what made me into who I am now – that’s an ever-growing, ever-evolving store of musical moments and memories. Introducing (Un)Focused Definition

For the past few years over at Nine Circles I cobble together a weekly playlist called – fittingly if slightly uninspired – The Nine Circles Playlist. We put together a list of mostly new metal tracks the staff have been listening to over the course of the past week and, since I get all the picks and build the playlist in YouTube, I get to inject a few of my picks up front. But it’s by nature of the site limiting: if this site has shown anything (beyond my inconsistency) it’s that my tastes run far beyond, and maybe is even more prominently removed from metal (don’t worry, I still love it). So since I’m making them anyway, why not do it here, but really focus on the music I love in all its many forms?

Welcome to (Un)Focused Definition, a new weekly playlist.

Dischord: The First Six Records (2022)

Day 23 of the #mayvinylchallenge asks for a limited edition/signed/numbered or otherwise rare album. I’ve been talking a lot about my love for the Dischord label, and was lucky enough to get in and order their limited edition box set of the First Six Records back when it was $40 and not the $250+ it’s going for now on Discogs. Covering the entire spectrum of music from bands I’ve never listened heard before now to bands that were a formative part of my youth, there’s a lot to unpack here, and that’s besides the great booklet, original liner notes and lyrics/posters, not to mention the careful job of sleeve and colored vinyl recreation, so let’s jump in here with some thoughts.
