Yoo II avec Nolan Potter

Yoo Doo Right, Population II & Nolan Potter: Yoo II avec Nolan Potter (2025)

Ever have one of those workdays that beat you down to the point you can’t remember your name, let alone whatever you had planned when you got home? Today was one of those days, and with only two hours to go I’m going to be very brief about my love for Yoo II avec Nolan Potter, the (possibly) sole output from a two-hour live jam session between Austin, TX psych rocker Nolan Potter and the experimental explorers from Québec: Yoo Doo Right and Population II. TL;DR? Hawkwind circa Space Ritual meets garage groove for some sweet extended jams, perfect for settling down into a better headspace.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 67: Breaks and Such

Second verse, same as the first? Once again, I was really hoping to get more (well, any) reviews out this week, but the continued search for a rhythm without my son combined with the impending arrival of Hooptober and work insanity made it impossible. I’m going to try and get at least one in a week during the next month and a half as I dive into the horror reviews, but – fingers crossed – the weekly playlists will continue. This week focuses on new releases and my re-engagment with the Grateful Dead, so enjoy and I’ll see you on the other side of Hooptober.

Nolan Potter: The Perils Of Being Trapped Inside A Head (2024)

I didn’t discover the psychedelic wonder of Nolan Potter until late in 2021, after I had already done my non-metal end of year podcast over at Nine Circles. Still, Music Is Dead was was a massive sizzle to every part of my brain, and I had no choice but to make it my non-metal album of the year. Since then I vowed never to make the same mistake again, and I was right on top of things when Potter released The Perils of Being Trapped Inside A Head back in April. Once again written, recorded, and performed by Potter (with an assist by former Lake Of Fire partner Dillon Fernandez on synths, percussion, and vocals) at his home in Austin, TX, it’s a lovely, borderline-unclassifiable slab of great rock and pop, absorbing a myriad of styles in the name of confessional, DIY music that resonates with me just as much as his previous work. In other words, now it’s trapped inside my head, and I couldn’t be happier.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 12: 2024, A Slightly Past Mid-Year Review

I’m about halfway through the next Flower Kings review, and also have a bunch of catchup work, both paying and not, that’s kept me from regular posting this week. So we’re going to keep things brief for this week’s playlist, which is going to highlight tracks from my favorite albums of the year so far. Think of it as a mid-year report, except it’s coming about a month and half too late. And to make up for the lack of commentary, and because there’s so much to love about music in 2024, we’re expanding one time from 1 hours to 2 hours.

Lots of different styles and genres within, so let’s cut the chit-chat and get to it.

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 6: I Have a Problem (More Recent Acquisitions)

Seriously. In the last two days I had nine CDs and about seven vinyl records arrive at the house. I have no idea how or when I’m going to find the time to sit back and luxuriate in them all, let alone write about them (that’s not quite true, I may have written about two of them already). And since next week is the summertime vacation playlist, I guess this week will be one more round of recent physical acquisitions. It has to end sometime, right?

Right?

Consuming in 2021: New Music

Sorry I’ve been away for a while. Due to holidays and some burnout I’ve been helping to hold down the fort at my other job over at Nine Circles, where I took over our weekly playlist and started my annual series of posts wrapping up my favorite metal albums of the year. And while my primary focus for 2021 has been digging deeper into the nooks and crannies of the music that made me a rock and roll addict for over 40 years, I still managed to find my way to a number of new releases that fired the synapses and gave way to the euphoric bliss of being able to turn away the ever-growing anxiety and depression. So before we jump back into the waters of yesteryear (Christmas yielded a bevy of vinyl treasures I can’t wait to talk about) let’s spend a little bit of time talking about some new music that kept my head, heart, and soul afloat this year.
