Happy 250th, if that’s your thing. I’ll be celebrating by listening to a lot of music, watching movies, and doing anything I can to stay out of the heat. I have a son who can barbecue, and a wife working all day. This is how I like holidays. The playlist this week is an assortment of new stuff that’s come in. I have three reviews in progress. Enjoy.

  • Deep Purple – “Guilt Trippin’”
  • Izz – “Late Night Salvation”
  • The Bevis Frond – “White Sun”
  • Legs on Wheels – “Centipede”
  • Tigran Hamasyan – “Manifeste”
  • Jeff Parker & ETA IVtet – “Like Swimwear”

We’re still doing fewer, longer tracks, with an emphasis on jazz this week. I’ve been cataloging my new stuff to get some sort of queue in order and a LOT of jazz has come in. And yet, neither Tigran Hamasyan or Jeff Parker were in those piles; these were new releases I just got turned on to.

Legs on Wheels might be one of the few modern prog bands to really nail the Gentle Giant sound, and the way they mix it with fusion and wit has been a great recent discovery, as has been the fantastic remaster of 2005’s My River Flows from NYC group Izz. I never dug into their back catalog bu this thing is a rock juggernaut. The Bevis Frond was a recently unearthed recommendation from Erik, and hits that ’90s indie rock thing in a way that works gangbusters on it. Yeah, I bought it, just waiting for it to arrive before reviewing.

Does the Deep Purple even need an explanation?
