(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 22: Getting My PostWax On

Had some unexpected travel that took me up and down the East coast this week, which is why we were a little lighter on reviews than I wanted to be. When I got home, I found a large package awaiting me: the final volume of Blues Funeral Recordings’s second PostWax series, along with a handy collector’s sleeve to store them. The label focuses on stoner rock that leans in a myriad of directions, including sludge, prog, doom, and psychedelia. In other words, they’re pretty much right up my alley.

The second volume consisted of nine releases, so rather than stick to a time limit for this playlist I’m picking a track from each one to whet your appetite for the kind of rock these guy put out. If you dig it, there’s great news: they’ve moved on from volumes and created an unlimited series you can subscribe to in various configurations. Each release comes with liner notes, tracks exclusive to the vinyl, and outstanding packaging (seriously, check out this video on how to build one from the second volume).

Enough shilling; let’s get to the tunes.

  • Josiah – “Let The Lambs See The Knife”
  • Mammoth Volume – “Diablo IV”
  • The Otolith – “Andromeda’s Wing”
  • Dead Meadow – “Valmont’s Pad”
  • Acid King – “Destination Psych/Beyond Vision”
  • Dozer – “Ex-Human, Now Beast”
  • REZN, Vinnum Sabbathi – “Hypersurreal”
  • Dopelord – “The Chosen One”
  • Elephant Tree, Lowrider – “Through The Rift”

Not going to do commentary this week, as the intro and the band names/song titles kinda speak for themselves. I’ll say that I was aware of the heavy psych of Dead Meadow and righteous rock of Acid King previously, and The Otolith is one fragment of the departed SubRosa, a band I was familiar with and dug. Everything else was a new and welcome discovery, particularly Mammoth Volume who inject a lot of fun progressive elements into their music, so much so I put the awesomely titled The Cursed Who Perform The Larvagod Rites on my 2022 Honorable Mentions list over at Nine Circles

Soon I’ll do a review of the whole series after I clear some other music out of the way. For now, bask in the haze and don’t forget to hydrate. AND VOTE IF YOU CAN.

Be safe, and see you next week.
