Yup. Every week for the last six months I’ve put out a playlist. I don’t know how many people actually read or listen to them, but I’m glad I kept the consistency up. The other thing I’ve kept up is buying more and more records and CDs; there will never be enough time to listen to them all. Maybe I’m hoarding for that time when I’m bed-ridden and this is all that will be left to me. maybe this morning for some reason I’m just more morose than usual; I’ve got a head cold and eating way more than I should. A morning walk with these tunes, recent purchases that need digging into might put a foothold or two in the pit.
- Thy Catalfaque – “Piros kocsi, fekete éj”
- Jupiter Fungus – “Underdog”
- Dr. Tree – “Vulcan Words”
- Mikio Masuda – “What’s Happening”
I’ve been into the weird metal meets folk meets prog meets classical un-classification of Thy Catafalque for a while now, but for some reason the singles from Hungarian artist Tamás Kátai’s latest release XII: A gyönyörű álmok ezután jönnek haven’t clicked with me like his earlier music. I’m hoping the full album will unveil the good stuff…Jupiter Fungus is yet another modern prog band reaching into the past, but this time the group is from Greece, and their debut Garden Electric has the prog nerds buzzing…I never heard of Dr. Tree before seeing the limited re-issue spoken of in reverent tones on Sea Of Tranquility’s The Professor’s Picks with LaserCD/Sensory Records Ken Golden. I grabbed a pricey copy but have not been disappointed with this New Zealand jazz/fusion outfit…Speaking of LaserCD, I went back to the well of their excellent selection of Japanese Jazz from East Wind records and grabbed among other things Mickey’s Mouth, the 1976 album from keyboardist Mikio Masuda which I’m sure we’ll get to a full review of soon…
- Judas Priest – “Rocka Rolla (2024 remix)”
- Letting Up Despite Great Faults – “In Steps (15th Anniversary Edition)”
- Isleptonthemoon – “Safety”
- Ryo Kawasaki – “On The Dot”
- Fela Kuti – “Mr. Follow Follow”
Not sure what to say about Judas Priest except I didn’t own a copy of Rock Rolla, and now I do…There was a great deal on the new album Reveries from one of my favorite indie dream pop acts Letting Up Desire Great Faults – grab their new album and for a steep discount grab the anniversary of their debut as well – autographed, even. I had no choice…The blackgaze of Isleptonthemoon was admittedly an impulse buy – Bindrune Records has a good track record with Panopticon, so when I heard the single I took a gamble. It’s very much what you expect, blackgaze and very thin production…Another East Wind import, the funky jazz rock of electric guitarist Ryo Kawasaki from his 1976 recording Eight Mile Road…Finally, how could I pass up the chance to grab Zombie, the classic album from Fela Kuti when I was visiting Syracuse at the great Sound Garden record shop? I couldn’t as you can see.
Be safe, be good to each other. See you next week.
