(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 50: Walk a Mile In My Shoes

Fifty of these. Feels like a milestone. But we’re just going to keep on keeping’ on, so to speak, and mark different milestones. In fact I have an idea for episode 52 already. Last night I got home late after seeing an incredible show that I’m going to write about here, so we’ll keep that under wraps for now and do another quick hit list of new albums I’m digging that came out recently as well as a few finds that made their way into my collection. And we’re even diving back into older rituals like ending with a Zappa track. Let’s go.

  • Kadavar – “I Just Want To Be A Sound”
  • Magic Pie – “Name It To Tame It”
  • Web Web – “Apotheosis”
  • Nankai TRIO – “Battle On Southern Sea”
  • Causa Sui – “Moledo”
  • Dwellers – “Inside Infinity”
  • PSI – “Horizonte”
  • Ash Ra Tempel – “Light: Look At Your Sun”
  • Frank Zappa – “RDNZL (Live June 21, 1974)”

I’m still making my mind up over the new direction Kadavar is going in…I was never a huge fan of their retro 70s sound, but then The Isolation Tapes blew me away. This new album is yet another change…Magic Pie is definitely going to make my EOY list, and I wrote about this album over at Nine Circles this week…A trio of different instrumental bands next, from the off-kilter Web Web to the furious fusion of Nankai TRIO to the more stoner, improvisational Causa Sui. All bring a lot of things I am really digging at the moment…I’ve become a fan of Small Stone Records, a label putting out some killer rock right now (I featured Miss Lava on last week’s playlist) and I’m looking forward to the new Dwellers based on this single…

Finally another trio of cuts from days long gone, with PSI being a band I saw scrolling through LaserCD’s inventory, stopping at the crazy cool cover. Then the ambient weirdness of Ash Ra Tempel, a band I knew from their association with Tangerine Dream but never dug into so I grabbed a few recordings from them as well as a bevy of solo releases from Klaus Schulz that’ll almost certainly covered here. And finally Zappa, releasing another archive set.

One day I’ll get to that Zappa series I want to do…

Be safe, be good to each other. See you next week.
