I feel like this week has been nothing but playlists. Two last Saturday, one on my birthday, and I just wrapped the 391st playlist for Nine Circles. So I’m going easy this week, the better to focus on the heaping pile of new music that came in and do a little organizing so I can better find all the music in said heaping pile. New week will be the return of regularly scheduled programming – I’m considering alternating between some of the albums on the 52 Reasons Why playlist that haven’t already been covered and some of the said heaping new music pile.
- Painted Doll – “Sun in the Sea”
- Supersister – “Present From Nancy”
- Naxatras – “Numenia”
- In Flames – “Bullet Ride”
- Dormant Ordeal – “Halo of Bones”
- Turnstile – “Never Enough”
- Ayreon – “Day Three: Pain”
- Stomu Yamashta – “Poker Dice”
I’m still knee-deep in my love affair with the work of Hedvig Mollestad, and after months of no words I finally got in my autographed vinyl of the last Painted Doll album (thanks Dave Hill!). From there I’ve been diving into the world Dutch prog act Supersister and their first three albums, and just got a budget box set of the fusion works of Stomu Yamashta, who blurs the lines between fusion, prog, and weird experimental.
A quartet of heavier music ensures you get your protein – Dormant Ordeal is definitely making my 9C end of year list, and the recent reissue of In Flames‘s Clayman has been in my sights for a while. I still have no idea what to make of Turnstile, but their new one came in as part of the Gimme Metal Vinyl Club and I’m digging its vibe. And Ayreon is just over the top drama with 1,001 guests, and the new 2025 remix sounds amazing.
Oh, and that Naxatras…yeah, it’s gonna be an end of year contender, too.
Be safe, be good to each other. See you next week.
