(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 62: What’s New?

Small steps. Repeated Deep Purple spins morphed into repeated Uriah Heep spins (the new stuff feels like a similar flavor to new DP), and rather than bear down and get another review out this week, I enjoyed taking bit of air and just listening to some of the new stuff that came in the house. I guess technically there is a fourth review, so if you dig stoner metal you can check out my review of the new Borracho over at Nine Circles. Otherwise, here’s what I’ve been spinning (or streaming) in my personal time.

  • Howling Giant – “Canyons”
  • Osees – “SNEAKER”
  • Uriah Heep – “Grazed by Heaven”
  • Frank Zappa – “Can’t Afford No Shoes (Rough Mix)”
  • Steve Hackett – “How Can I?”
  • High on Fire – “The Black Plot”
  • Moon Letters – “Child of Tomorrow”
  • Go Kurosawa – “autowalk”
  • Asunojokei – “Zeppelin”
  • Hawkwind – “The Watcher”
  • Dwellers – “Marigold (Heart of Stone)”

Random notes…Howling Giant are one of my favorite current bands; I love their style of melodic, stoner rock and the new single has me excited. The latest from Osees is one I’m currently lukewarm on; we’ll see where it goes. I got the new Frank Zappa deluxe set for One Size Fits All about a month early (benefit of ordering directly from them) and I love the alternate mixes as well as the gorgeous analog master the new vinyl has (not on the CD release).

Elsewhere everyone needs to hear the gorgeous vocals on “How Can I?” and have it go straight into the furious attack of High on Fire. Moon Letters put out one of the best prog albums so far this year in This Dark Earth, and I’m currently digging through their earlier releases where I found “Child of Tomorrow”…Go Kurosawa is the co-founder of the great Guruguru Brain record label, and the former drummer/vocalist of Kikagaku Moyo, a band everyone needs in their life.
