It’s official: on Thursday we unpacked our son in his dorm room, said our goodbyes, and became empty nesters. One of the biggest gifts I could give him (besides paying for college) was letting him pick the tunes on the trip up, and so a portion of the playlist this week are the tunes he asked for to calm his nerves. The other songs are the ones I used to calm my nerves, and to help get through the emotional rollercoaster of missing his presence. Which means not a lot of commentary this week, hopefully things will get back to some semblance of normality for the next one.

I haven’t listened to 3 in ages, but I remember grabbing this album from my local shop the year my son was born. On the trip up he turned me on to Kali Uchis, and I discovered just as he was leaving we have a love of female-driven neo-soul. Deep Purple has of course become a mainstay in my life, and my nephew and I bonded over his dad’s (wrong) distaste for Steely Dan. I can’t remember how I discovered Wooden Shjips, except that I was listening to something else and it said the guitar player was from them, and I checked out the album Dos and really dug it.
