Steve Hackett: Voyage of the Acolyte (1975)

It was a difficult walk. We had a fight just before then, and because I wasn’t sure if it was going to continue I kept my headphones off in case I needed to listen and respond. She put hers on first, and I I did the same, reaching for something to get lost in. I’d been so enamored of Steve Hackett and his live series of discs covering large swaths of the Genesis catalog I had largely foregone his actual solo output. I found a great 1st US pressing of his debut Voyage of the Acolyte on Discogs, spun it up (virtually) and proceeded to get lost.

Torche: Torche (2005)

I’m sure there were other bands purveying the sludge pop vibe before Torche; hell, you could say that Floor, the band founded by Torche’s Steve Brooks and Juan Montoya were already setting the groundwork for what Torche, the eponymous debut would crash out of the gate with. But it was my first dalliance with this kind of heaviness, one sheathed in a sparkling pop veneer, made more striking by the rainbows adorning the molten volcano on the cover art. Things would get even more melodic and catchy on subsequent releases, but I started here in that glorious year where extreme metal became a touchstone for me (again); let let’s take a moment and wrap up the work week with why this works (alliteration for the win).

(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 61: Crawling Back

I’m starting to feel a little more solid. Maybe that’s the effect of two weeks on this medication, or the fact I’ve gotten at least seven hours of sleep the past two nights, or that I took a day off work. Probably a combination of all the above, plus a generous dose of Deep Purple. I have no idea why, but they’ve been a salve these past few weeks when it was getting harder and harder to concentrate on anything. I promise the playlist has other stuff besides them, though.
