I think I have a problem. I don’t know if it’s some kind of coping mechanism (uh, its DEFINITELY a coping mechanism) for the stress and anxiety of work and my son and my own fears and depression, but I am amassing CDs and records like it’s the end of the world and I have to preserve our collective artistic accomplishments for future generations. As as I read back that last sentence I realized it might very well be that if we keep moving in the abysmal direction our government, AI, and the vacuous hole of social media seem to be leading us. Anyway, here’s a rough hour of some of the new music that’s come into the house over the last week.
- Gomorrah – “Rainbowlight”
- Secret Oyster – “Paella”
- The Bridge – “Ambivalens”
- Pacific Sound – “Erotic Blues”
- Arabs in Aspic – “TV”
- Shun – “Blind Eye”
- Wo Fat – “Lost Highway”
- Sundrifter – “Sky Peoples Son”
- Squeaky Feet – “Irish Goodbye”
The playlist is split into rough sections. The first four songs come from my recent dive into the collection of early 70s psych rock from the now defunct Long Hair Music – Laser CD picked up most of their remaining stock, so if this kind of music grabs you, head over there to dig through the remaining physical copies – a lot of it isn’t available for streaming, like the Nosferatu and Pacific Sound…
Then it’s a quick breather with two fun diversions -I grabbed The Bridge based off the great cover and album title, and it’s a fun, funky instrumental album from 1972 that will make you smile. The Arabs in Aspic was a discount purchase, and I really did their Zappa-esque approach to composition, so why not feature a song that directly references the Man himself?
Next was a three-pack of CDs I picked up from Small Stone Records, a label I’m growing to love and trust, specializing in some of the best stoner and psych rock being made right now. A lot of folks know Wo Fat, but I implore you to check out Sundrifter and Shun if you’re not already familiar. Finally there’s the just -released new album from Squeaky Feet, which blends prog and jam rock in such a way I’m smitten with it.
Be safe, be good to each other. See you next week.
