(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 72: Aggressive Rise

I’ve been head down for so long with my deep dive into the Grateful Dead that a random pop-up of the latest Ghost (not the heaviest album by any and every definition of the word) triggered my brain to seek out some aggression to get in my ears. That and the latest reissues from Boris appearing at my door when I returned from a couple days of travel were the impetus for today’s title: aggression is rising, but it can’t completely stem the tide of obscure 70s rock gems from making their way to my ears. What do I mean? Let’s dig in below the jump.

  • Perturbator – “Apocalypse Now (feat. Ulver)”
  • Giöbia – “Fractal Haze”
  • Babe Ruth – “Wells Fargo”
  • Barclay James Harvest – “Taking Some Timer On”

Perturbator was a big thing for a lot of people for about four years, but that was almost a decade ago and the few times I checked in I immediately checked out. But you tell me Ulver is featured on the new album and I’m there. I’m digging this track at the very least…Not sure what caused me to discover Giöbia, but their brand of heavy psychedelic space rock twists my DNA in just the right way…Next up we head back to the 70s with Babe Ruth and Barclay James Harvest; I was aware (though unfamiliar) with BJH, but Babe Ruth is a new funky soul-driven vibe for me. Fun stuff…

  • Boris – “PINK”
  • Chat PIle – “Garbage Man”
  • Today Is The Day – “Pain and Frustration”
  • Fiery Furnaces – “Blueberry Boat”
  • sunn O))) – “Eternity’s Pillars”

Like I said, when I returned home yesterday I had the vinyl reissue of PINK along with the newly “mixed” version of dronevil from Boris, both of which really kicked my appetite for heavier fare into gear. PINK was my introduction to the band back in the day, and has a special place in my heart…I got the vinyl mix of Chat Pile’s two EPs from the Gimme Metal vinyl club, and its rough, barking blend of hardcore and noise rock is very pleasing at this particular moment…New music from Steve Austin and Today Is The Day was a welcome surprise, and I’m still digging into its complexities before I determine if it’s better than 2020’s excellent No Good to Anyone

Firey Furnaces were one of the band that triggered my indie rock phase back in the day thanks to my buddy Sean, and the recent reissue of Blueberry Boat reminded me of just how out there the alt/indie scene was at the time…Finally, news of new music from sunn O))) was nice, but I was not expecting to be taken in by just how damn good this EP is. No idea if more new music is on the horizon from O’Malley and Anderson, but this is a heart 30 minutes of hypnotic drone that hits the spot…
