(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 94: Extended Break?

playlist header 94

Work not only continues on the website, but on the intended purpose of the website: after a week I can already hear a difference in my playing, and I do have my first song (“Purple Haze”) learned if not yet 100% in the fingers, if you will. Work proceeds apace on both “Paranoid” and “Sunshine of Your Love” – I know the songs pretty much backwards and forwards but never learned the solos so that’s next along with more ear training and adjusting my pick position and preference (currently loving the Dunlop Primetone Jazz III XL in 1.4mm). In the meantime, we’ll break from the curriculum songs and hit on recent releases that have made an impression while I learn my classic rock riffs.

  • Tinariwen – “Erghad Afewo”
  • Neurosis – “First Red Rays”
  • Darkthrone – “Pre-Historic Metal”
  • Damaged Bug – “END OF THE ROAD”
  • Mitski – Where’s My Phone?”
  • Annahstasia – “Take Care of Me (Live at Glasshaus)
  • Osees – “Cara Maluco”
  • Kim Gordon – “PLAY ME”
  • Stormkeep – “Carnal Tapestries of Nailtorn Flesh”
  • Nothing – “Purple Strings”
  • Ed O’Brien – “Blue Morpho”
  • Frank Zappas & Captain Beefheart – “Carolina Hard-Core Ecstasy”

A double shot of John Dwyer between the new Osees EP and the new Damaged Bug LP…a fair dose of metal with the new Darkthrone single and the surprise and excellent Neurosis release, not to mention the return of Stormkeep…sounds like Nothing has gone pure shoegaze while Kim Gordon goes back to a more accessible sound, and Mitski’s new LP feels good if not as immediate a punch as The Land is Inhospitable…but it’s growing on me.
