(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 97: Decayed Bones, Drifting Spirits

playlist 97

I swear…I actually did have the playlist entire built and ready to go yesterday. But we have a guest staying with us this weekend and, well…I did not factor in how the “adorbs” factor would contribute to another late playlist. But I mean, come on…do you blame me? I’ll also note the title this week has nothing to do with mer and everything to do with two of the tracks below. Except I can’t help when there’s a whiff of serendipity and so, yes…it may also be a veiled commentary on my bones and spirit, but I swear that only came to my forebrain a few moments ago, and not when I built it.

Pinkie swear.

  • Brainticket – “Radagacuca”
  • Spirit Adrift – “Window Within”
  • The Neptune Power Federation – “And the Bones Decay”
  • Air – “All I Need”
  • Bob Dylan – “Visions of Johanna”
  • Pymlico – “Second Rate Punk”
  • Serge Gainsbourg – “Melody”
  • Stone Temple Pilots – “Trippin’ on a Hole in a Paper Heart”
  • Irreversible Entanglements – “Vibrate Higher”
  • Birth Control – “Physical and Mental Short Circuit”

I mentioned I’ve been digging into Bob Dylan’s Blonde on Blonde in last week’s playlist, so why actually throw a track up here, as well as a stone cold killer cut from Stone Temple Pilots, a band I’ve been reevaluating and recently offered up as a candidate for our album discussion group.

Brainticket is a band I’ve started writing about three times here. I’ll get to it this week, along with the closing track from Birth Control. Both are fun albums folks looking for obscure ’70s rock and prog might enjoy. They’re a far cry from Air, who was HUGE and completely passed me by, so I’m rectifying that along with digging deeper into the weird, slightly creepy but undeniably alluring world of Serge Gainsbourg.

Finally, farewell Spirit Adrift. Nate Garrett has had a hell of a rough decade, and I hope he finds some peace in whatever he decides to do next. Oh, and hello new Neptune Power Federation. Your fun rock eased the pain of losing a great band.
