BWOOOOOOWWWWWMMM! How a band like sunn O))) can basically take that feeble attempt at onomatopoeia and twist it into something so hypnotic, so mesmerizing and frankly…beautiful is beyond me. Such is the case with Eternity’s Pillars, the new EP/single from the band’s recent signing/partnership with Sub Pop Records. Unhurried and as intentional as ever, the band doesn’t so much rip as thrum their way through three massive tracks that spill molten love all over you.
I don’t really know what else to talk about here. If you know the sound of sunn O))), you know what’s in store for you with the three tracks represented here – don’t worry about whether it’s technically an EP (it is 30 minutes long) or a single, since technically this is “Eternity’s Pillars” b/w “Raise the Chalice” and “Reverential”. Each track, from the massive 13-minute title track to the shorter b-sides is powerful and all-enveloping, especially is played loud on external speakers.
Both Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson have been at this for decades, and what I find fascinating as I go through early albums like the White albums up to the dual explosion of Life Metal and Pyroclasts, which I covered back in the day is the growth and subtlety of their sound. The way the pair (and their extended lineups in certain scenarios) are able to find the frequencies they do, deep in the bowels of the planet yields wonders upon multiple listens. There’s depth in the production you might not expect considering the genre, accenting harmonics and swells while letting the strings breathe and reverberate.
Feels odd to use words to describe something so primal. The only way to know sunn O))), to reach Eternity’s Pillars, is to just let it overwhelm you.
