(Un)Focused Definition Ep. 86: Storms Both Literal and Otherwise

playlist banner 86

All signs point to another 1-2 feet of snow between tomorrow and Monday, so of course my strong-backed son returned to college, and my snowblower finally crashed and burned out. Also I guess it’s been a year so why not another massive organizational shift that sees me under another division, losing my current manager out in said storm with no position.

This week’s playlist contemplates all that, but manages to sneak in some plan fun stuff as well.

  • James Gang – “Funk #49”
  • The Damned – “Gimme Danger (Stooges cover)”
  • AVTT/PTTN – “Dark Night of My Soul”
  • Hermann Szobel – “Mr. Softee”
  • Winged Wheel – “Demonstrably False”
  • Dry Cleaning – “Hit My Head All Day”
  • Alan Vega – “Ice Drummer”
  • Paul Cauthen – “Bayou By You”
  • Sykofant – “Heart of the Woods”
  • Megadeth – “The Last Note”

Breaking a few of my rules with this one: I’ve featured this Hermann Szobel track before, but now that I finally snagged a copy of the vinyl from Discogs I’m bringing it to your attention again in preparation for its inevitable review…I had Winged Wheel on last week’s playlist, but over the past few days I’ve been digging into their previous album Big Hotel, and I think I like it even more…

A quick word about my boss, who could a pain like anyone else but also was and remains a trusted friend who listened and was there for a lot of the trauma I experienced this year, and is on a side a killer guitar player and singer. He flew in this week and I brought a pair of guitars and a small amp to work. We booked a conference room and jammed for a few hours as we had our final 1:1 in person. He has a massive ’70s rock vocabulary in his head and fingers, and we spent a nice chunk of time getting my head and fingers to understand the rhythmic cadence of the James Gang and Walsh’s famous “Funk #49.”

My brain keeps wanting to associate it with “Footloose.” Don’t ask me why.

Be safe, be good to each other. See you next week.
