Sometimes you want to fall into the depths of a great song or album, stretching your senses around and in between the notes, feeling the rhythm shifts and tempo changes. Sometimes you want to dig into the marrow of lyrics, searching for analogues to your life and experiences. Sometimes, though, you just want some DUMB FUN. That’s this playlist: dumb, mindless fun for my soul. Note that my definition of DUMB FUN may differ from yours…and that’s perfectly okay. Let’s get it.
- William Shatner – “Common People”
- King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – “Rattlesnake”
- Iggy Pop – “Lust For Life”
- AC/DC – “If You Want Blood (You Got It)”
- Angry Samoans – “Lights Out”
- Funkadelic – “Super Stupid”
- Blue Öyster Cult – “Godzilla”
- Quiet Riot – “Cum On Feel The Noize”
- Thee Oh Sees – “Keys To The Castle”
- Metallica – “Last Caress/Green Hell”
- Frank Zappa – “Fembot In A Wet T-Shirt”
- The Damned – “I Feel Alright”
- William Shatner – “I Can’tGet Behind That”
Not gonna adda lot of notes; the intro is pretty self explanatory. I’ll say I unabashedly love the William Shatner album, and bookending the playlist with Has Been‘s opening and closing tracks just felt…right. I haven’t listened to Angry Samoans in forever, but it was one of the first tracks I thought of when building this list. Which admittedly has some obvious choices (Quiet Riot, anyone?) and maybe the King Gizzard track is a little too on the nose with all the memes and Tik-Toks using the tune. But that was the first album I discovered (for Nine Circles, no less) by the band, and I always had a soft spot for it.
Also this was the perfect opportunity to get some truly dumb Zappa on here, and to double dip on the Iggy Pop by adding the classic Stooges cover from The Damned.
Be safe, be good to each other. See you next week.
